Metro has been reviewing some of your bus routes to help keep our city heading in the right direction. While the public consultation period has now ended you can still read the proposals below.

There was approx. 2’500 submissions received from the public. ECan will now assess that feedback and determine where proposed routes need to change. The final network design will be provided to Commissioners for approval in September. Once approved the new bus network will be implemented late 2014 – early 2015.

This review aims to reflect the changes in places people want to travel to. It is a plan to improve the Metro Network so we keep our city heading in the right direction.

The review proposes improvements to city and Selwyn bus services. It reflects input from the previous consultation and customer feedback on the changes made in 2012. Our aim for the planned improvements is to get more people using buses. The plan proposes providing frequent, reliable services in popular areas. Less than 50% of operating costs are covered by fares and are subsidised by local rates and taxes. Our services have to be economically viable and we are trying to improve them without increasing fares or rates.

Our first review looked at services in the north and south of the city, and in Waimakariri. It introduced the successful high-frequency Blue Line. The following information explains proposed changes to the current routes, the proposed new routes and a map showing the proposed network.

Our Plan

Public transport will play a key part in allowing the space for the people-friendly, green city we all want to emerge. Our vision is a network that is carefully designed and well-used by many people. The key to our plan is five high frequency core services running across town every 10-15 minutes.

Our Plan

The core services are to be supported by suburban connecting services. These will bring people to the high frequency services if they don’t live nearby, as well as taking them to key places. Most current passengers will benefit from better services, but it will mean that some will have to travel differently. They may need to change buses at a suburban interchange in order to complete their journey. Most people will still be within 500 metres of a Metro service.

O The Orbiter	Return to Gayhurst Rd between The Palms and Eastgate once Gayhurst Rd bridge is fixed.
3 Airport – Sumner	All buses travel via Avonhead Mall to Burnside Park every 10 – 15 minutes then alternating buses to continue to Sheffield Cres or the Airport and Christchurch Mail Centre every 30 minutes.
5 Hornby –Southshore	Travel to Westfield along Riccarton Rd instead of Blenheim Rd. Extend to Rolleston every half hour with some express trips weekday mornings and afternoons. Replace New Brighton to Southshore section with new 151 New Brighton – Southshore service.
7 Halswell – Queenspark	Provide a link between Halswell, Addington, Christchurch Hospital, the central city, The Palms and Burwood Hospital. Replace travel through Aidanfield and Westlake with buses to new Longhurst and Knights Stream subdivisions. Discontinue services to Kennedy’s Bush.*
17 Huntsbury – Bryndwr	No change.
21 Ilam – Mt Pleasant	Discontinue. Mostly replace with new 130 Hei Hei - Avonhead via Riccarton service and the 140 Russley - Mt Pleasant service.
23 Hyde Park – Woolston	Discontinue. Mostly replace with new 130 Hei Hei - Avonhead via Riccarton service and 112 Barrington - Eastgate service.
28 Papanui – Lyttelton & Rapaki	No change.
29 Airport – City via Fendalton	No change.
40 Middleton – Wainoni	Discontinue. Partly replace with new 80 Lincoln – North Shore and 100 Halswell – The Palms via Riccarton services.
44 North Shore	Travel from The Palms to the central city only. Mostly replace route between New Brighton and The Palms with the 60 Halswell – New Brighton and the new 80 Lincoln – North Shore services.
60 Hillmorton – Parklands	Replace travel from The Palms to Burwood Hospital with the high frequency 7 Halswell – Queenspark service. New route between The Palms and New Brighton. Travel to Halswell on the Park subdivision.
81 Lincoln	Replace with new 80 Lincoln – North Shore service which travels via Blenheim Rd to Westfield and the city. Will have some express trips weekday mornings and afternoons.
83 Hei Hei	Discontinue. Mostly replace with new 130 Hei Hei – Avonhead via Riccarton service.

Proposed Bus Routes

High Frequency Routes – every 10-15 mins (Monday – Friday 7am – 7pm)
B Blue Line	Travel the same route between Rangiora and Princess Margaret Hospital with same frequency. However some buses will extend trips every 30 minutes up Hackthorne Rd in Cashmere.
O The Orbiter	Travel current route between The Palms, Northlands, University of Canterbury, Westfield, Barrington, Princess Margaret Hospital and Eastgate. Bewteen Eastgate and The Palms no longer travels via Stanmore Rd, instead returns to pre-earthquake route along Gayhurst Rd (once Gayhurst Rd bridge is fixed).
3 Airport – Sumner	All buses travel the current route from Sumner via Avonhead Mall to Burnside Park every 10 – 15 minutes . Then alternating buses to continue to Sheffield Crescent or the Airport and Christchurch Mail Centre.
5 Rolleston – New Brighton	All buses travel between New Brighton, Westfield and Hornby along Riccarton Rd instead of Blenheim Rd. Between Eastgate and the central city travels along Gloucester St instead of Cashel St. At the Hornby Hub, some buses to travel onto Rolleston every half hour with some express trips weekday mornings and afternoons.
7 Halswell – Queenspark	Travel between Halswell and Queenspark via new Longhurst and Knights Stream subdivisions, Halswell Shops, Addington, Christchurch Hospital, central city, The Palms and Burwood Hospital.
Connecting Routes – every 15 – 60 mins
C The Comet	Travel between Halswell and Redwood through Wigram Skies subdivision to The Hornby Hub. From here, travel along Carmen Rd, Masham Rd and Russley Rd to the Airport, via Dakota Park business area. No longer travels via Avonhead. Then travel from the Airport to Northlands via Memorial Ave, Roydvale Ave and Harewood Rd. The route between Northlands and Redwood to remain the same as current route.
17 Bryndwr – Huntsbury	Current route with same frequency.
28 Papanui – Lyttelton & Rapaki	Current route with same frequency.
29 Airport – City	Current route with same frequency.
44 The Palms – CPIT	Travel from The Palms to central city only using the current route.
60 Halswell – New Brighton	Travel between Halswell, central city and The Palms unchanged, other than extending to cover Halswell on the Park subdivision. New route between The Palms and New Brighton. No longer travel via Burwood Hospital.
80 Lincoln – North Shore	Travel from Lincoln via Blenheim Rd to Westfield Riccarton and central city, with some express trips weekday mornings and afternoons. From there, to Eastgate and North Shore via Wainoni Rd.
95 Waikuku and Pegasus	Current route with same frequency.
100 Halswell – The Palms via Riccarton	Travel from Halswell and Westlake to Wigram Skies. From there to Westfield Riccarton, Merivale Mall through to The Palms.
107 Styx Mill – Northlands	Current route with same frequency
108 Casebrook - Northlands	Current route with same frequency
111 Westmorland – Barrington	Travel between Westmorland and Barrington Mall via Hoon Hay Rd and Rose St. No longer travels via Sparks Rd.
112 Barrington – Eastgate	Travel from Barrington Mall through Beckenham to St Martins, Opawa, Woolston and Bromley to Eastgate Mall.
120 Burnside - Barrington	Current route retained other than in Spreydon, where it travels along Frankleigh St instead of Rose St. Better connections to 60 Halswell - New Brighton at Barrington Mall.
130 Hei Hei – Avonhead via Riccarton	Travel from Hornby to Hei Hei, Church Corner, Westfield Riccarton, University of Canterbury through Avonhead to Avonhead Mall.
140 Russley – Mt Pleasant	Travel from Hornby, Delamain, Yaldhurst Village, Church Corner to Westfield Riccarton. From there, travel along Moorhouse Ave past CPIT to Eastgate and on to Mt Pleasant.
151 New Brighton – Southshore	Travel between New Brighton and Southshore with some express trips from Southshore to the city on weekday mornings and afternoons.
152 New Brighton – Burwood Hospital	Travel between Burwood Hospital and Queenspark to New Brighton.
171 The Palms – Prestons	Travel from The Palms and Prestons subdivision with some buses continuing on to Spencerville.
820 Burnham - Lincoln	Travel between Burnham and Lincoln via Rolleston through Izone Business Park, past Rolleston Aquatic Centre and Farringdon subdivision to Springston. Then follow the current route to Lincoln.
