Metro's public transport fares are changing on Monday 7 July.
Changes will impact the way the Under 25 concession is currently structured. If you're aged 5-18, you'll be eligible for a Child concession, and if you're aged 19-24 years, you'll be eligible for a Youth concession.
Child and Youth fares will be different. If you have a Community Services Card, we highly encourage you to add it onto your Metrocard to access the best fares.

If you’re 19-24 years of age (inclusive) and paying with your Metrocard, you should automatically get access to the Youth Fare.
When you turn 25 your Metrocard will automatically update to a standard fare, so if you are eligible for another concession, make sure you apply for it then.
If you’re not getting this fare, your date of birth may be incorrect in our system, so you’ll need to visit us. Please see more details here.
How to access the Youth Fare Metrocard concession
When you apply for your Metrocard, you need to show some identification with your name and date of birth on it.
It's that simple - from then on, simply tap your Metrocard to receive your age-related concession while you're aged 19-24.
All concessions fares are only available on a Metrocard, you can’t access this fare when paying with cash.
Making sure your date of birth is correct on your Metrocard
If you received your Metrocard through channels other than the Bus Interchange, online, or at a Metro agency, you may need to update your date of birth. For example, if you received your Metrocard through a workplace promotion.
To update or to double check your date of birth:
- Visit the Metroinfo counter at the Bus Interchange
- Bring with you some form of identification, including your date of birth
- Get your card set up with your correct age
Historical Tertiary Cards and Cando Cards
We no longer issue new Tertiary Cards, but if you have a historical Tertiary Card, the Youth Fare will automatically be applied to these cards from 7 July 2025.
Students who have a 2023 Cando card can continue to use it to pay for Metro services after the original card expiry date of May 2024. These cards will now be valid until we introduce the new National Ticketing Solution. We will provide more information on this change later in 2025.
What if you’re eligible for multiple concessions
You may be eligible for more than one concession, but you can only choose one.
Check out all concession fares here and see which one might be the best fit for you.
If you’re eligible for a Community Services Card concession, we encourage you to add your Community Services Card to your Metrocard to get access to the best fare.

How to use your concession
Once you have made sure your date of birth is correctly loaded on your Metrocard, just tap your Metrocard when you board the bus or ferry. The Youth Fare will automatically be deducted.
How much it costs
You can see the cost of the Youth concession fare via the link below. Daily and weekly fare caps will also apply for your Metrocard.

Proof of age
Any passenger who is eligible for age-related fares (either paying by Metrocard or cash) may be required to provide proof of age identification to the driver. Accepted identification needs to include a photo and state the person's date of birth - for example, a Cando card, school ID card or a driver licence. Failure to provide identification to the driver when asked can result in an adult fare being charged.
