Have your say on the Rolleston bus commute – what's working best for you?
Selwyn-based commuters are encouraged to have their say on local bus services.
Two new routes were created, 84 Rolleston Direct West and 85 Rolleston Direct East, resulting in 21 additional direct daily services. These combined services have been running as a six-month trial.
It follows strong demand for extra capacity, so it’s great to see how this trial has responded to that.
Patronage has been tracking well, with 31,000 passenger trips recorded on Route 84 and Route 85 over the past four months. This is 30% more passenger trips than what was recorded over the same time last year.
Bentley Coachlines initially approached Environment Canterbury asking for approval to run its privately operated commuter services from Rolleston to the city in June. Staff worked with the operator to provide commuters with a combined offering.
As a private operator, Bentley Coachlines is not subsidised and does not rely on ratepayer funding. It’s not part of the Metro network, meaning that it has its own fare and payment system. More details on the Route 84 and 85 services, fares and stops can be found on www.metroinfo.co.nz/timetables/84-85-rolleston-city/
As we near the end of the trial period, we want to know if you’ve used the service, what improvements would make you use the service, or use it more often, and what your experiences have been.
Like with any trial, it's important people have their say. Your feedback and support of this trial will help determine and shape what it looks like in future.
Metro and Bentley Coachlines will work together on plans for the services beyond the trial period. Any changes will be communicated to customers ahead of time.
Feedback can be submitted via a short survey on ecan.govt.nz/84-85survey
The survey will close at 9AM on Thursday 5 March 2026.
