Motu Move launches in Greater Christchurch on 10 November
The countdown is on!
From 10 November 2025, you’ll be able to tag on to any Metro bus or ferry across Greater Christchurch using your debit or credit card, phone, or smartwatch.
If you’ve travelled overseas, you might have seen this kind of system in action in places like Singapore, London or Sydney — and now it’s coming right here to Canterbury!
From launch day, customers in Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri can pay a standard adult Metro fare — $3 on buses and $5 on ferries — simply by tagging on with a contactless debit or credit card, or digital wallet such as Apple Pay or Google Pay.
There are no transaction fees, no top-ups, and no apps required — and for now, no need to tag off.
Customers with concessions such as child, youth or Community Services Card fares should continue to use their Metrocard as usual until these options are added to Motu Move in a future phase. SuperGold card holders can keep showing their card to the driver during free travel hours.
This is just the first phase of Motu Move, with more features coming in 2026.
