Contactless payments

Motu Move lets you pay for Metro buses and ferries using your contactless payments with your debit or credit card, mobile phone or smart watch.

There is no surcharge when using these new payment methods.

Looking for information on prepaid Motu Move cards? See our Motu Move card page.

Contactless payment types

Everyone aged five and over needs their own way to pay when using contactless payments.

Credit and debit cards

Motu Move accepts payments from contactless debit or credit cards. All Visa, Mastercard or American Express cards are accepted.

If your card has a microchip or contactless symbol, and you use contactless payments elsewhere, then you’re good to go!

Simply tag on with your contactless payment when you board, for a standard adult fare.

Phones and smartwatches

You can also tag on with Apple Pay and Google Pay on your mobile phone or smartwatch.

See the following webpages for more information on how to set up these payments on your device.

Please note that your physical debit or credit card and your card in your digital wallet are different payment types.

Concessions (including SuperGold)

If you have a child, youth, Community Services Card, SuperGold or Total Mobility concession, it be linked to contactless payments.

Linking your concession will ensure you pay your usual discounted fare or get SuperGold free travel when boarding using contactless payment.

Important information about contactless payments

Use the same payment method when transferring

Contactless payments support up to two free transfers within a 2-hour period to get to your destination. Make sure you use the same contactless payment method in order to receive your free transfers.

No need to tag off yet

You don’t need to tag off yet. Tagging off will be implemented once Motu Move is fully rolled out. We will provide more information well in advance of any changes.

Travelling with friends or family

Please note that you cannot tag on twice with the same contactless payment method. If you need to pay for multiple people, you must use a different card or device for each person. See our Ways to Pay page for more information.

If you need to pay for other passengers, keep using a Metrocard or cash for now. After 23 November, Motu Move cards will support payments for other passengers.

Fare caps

Current daily and weekly fare caps still apply when paying with contactless payments as long as you tag on with the same card or device for every trip.

For more information on fare caps, please visit our fares page.

Fares are charged overnight

Motu Move automatically calculates the best fare for your day’s travel and charges it overnight. You won’t see the payment come out of your account immediately after tagging on — it’s processed later, once all your trips for the day have been completed.
