Free travel for 5-12 year olds with Metro

Published 15/08/2023

Young children aged 5-12 can now travel free on all Metro services when using their Metrocard effective Monday 14 August.

This follows the Government's announcement of an Under 13 free concession earlier in the year and means that kids can hop on board and enjoy a comfortable, safe ride anywhere on our network.

Children under 5 continue to travel free and do not need a Metrocard.

Travel smarter with your Metrocard

For 5-12 year olds to receive free travel, they must have their Metrocard with them every time they travel. The concession will be automatically applied when tapping the Metrocard to board, using the date of birth that's registered to the card.

Please note that the government's concession is exclusively available for Metrocard holders, and child cash fares on the bus without a Metrocard cost $2.

For more information on how to access these Under 13 fares please see our child fare page.
